The heat hit us the second we stepped off the plane in Mexicoâthick, warm, alive. It felt like the start of something unforgettable, and it didnât take long to realize it was going to be exactly that. It was me and Eda, along with John and Frankieâfour of us ready for chaos, laughs, and whatever Mexico had waiting. From the moment we got to the resort, the vibe was set. Drinks in hand, music in the background, and that feeling like time just slowed down. But the real adventure started when we left the resort. We woke up early for **Chichen Itza**, still half-asleep but buzzing with excitement. The drive felt like a buildupâlike we were heading toward something legendary. And then we saw it. The pyramid. Standing there in front of it, it didnât even feel real. Massive, perfectly symmetrical, almost like it was placed there by something beyond human. You could feel the history in the air. John was cracking jokes as usual, Frankie was trying to get the perfect photo, and Eda and I just stood there for a moment, taking it all in. It wasnât just a landmarkâit was a moment. After that, we headed to a **cenote**âhidden away, surrounded by jungle. You walk down, and suddenly it opens up into this natural pool, crystal-clear water glowing under the sunlight breaking through the trees. No hesitationâwe jumped in. The water was cold, refreshing, and honestly one of the best feelings ever after the heat. We were swimming, laughing, splashing like kids again. Frankie tried to act brave jumping in, but we all saw that hesitation. John, of course, went full send. Floating there, looking up at the sky through the opening, it felt unreal. Quiet, peaceful⌠but still full of energy from all of us just enjoying the moment. Then came the part that took things to another levelâthe ATV ride through the jungle. We geared up, hopped on, and within minutes we were flying through dirt trails, mud splashing everywhere. It wasnât clean, it wasnât calmâit was wild. The deeper we went into the jungle, the louder it got. Birds, insects⌠and then something else. Monkeys. We actually stopped when we saw themâjust hanging out in the trees like it was their world and we were just passing through. Watching them jump from branch to branch, completely free, was one of those moments you donât forget. Then it was back on the ATVs, racing through the jungle like we were in some movie. By the time we got back, covered in dust and still hyped from the ride, it hit usâthis trip wasnât just a vacation. It was one of those experiences. The kind you talk about for years. The kind where every moment feels like a highlight. From standing in front of ancient history, to diving into hidden waters, to ripping through the jungle with your closest people⌠Mexico gave us everything. And honestly? Weâd do it all over again tomorrow.
Day 1: Departure from the City The adventure commences. After weeks (okay, months) of planning, we finally set offâToronto in the rearview and Banff somewhere far ahead on the horizon. No major stops todayâjust hours of driving, daydreaming about mountains, and feeling the thrill of freedom. We are officially in road trip mode. Tomorrow? Deeper into Northern Ontario. Bring on the lakes, forests, and roadside surprises.
Day 2: Between Lakes and Pines We awoke early to the hum of the highway and the aroma of coffee from a roadside diner. The city was already in the rearviewânow it was winding roads, sleepy towns, and endless stretches of Northern Ontario wilderness. Today reminded me: Ontario is vast. You can drive for hours and still be in the same provinceâbut every kilometre becomes more wild and beautiful. Two days in, and already this feels like more than a tripâit is a reset. Just us, the road, and the open sky.
Day 3: Dryden, ON â Regina, SK One province down, two to go. Today we officially left the trees behind and entered the prairies. It was a long haulâover 800 kmâbut the change in scenery made it feel like we had entered a different world. What began as forests and rocky cliffs gradually flattened into wide-open skies and endless golden fields. Welcome to the Prairies. Next stop: Alberta. The mountains are getting closer.
Day 4: Regina, SK â Calgary, AB Another day, another province! Today was about crossing the last stretch of prairie and finally reaching Alberta, where the flatlands begin to ripple and rise, hinting at what is to come. We arrived in Calgary by late afternoon, the city skyline rising out of the plains like a surprise. After days of quiet towns and winding roads, Calgary feels electric. A bit of rest, a proper meal, and a chance to breathe before the mountains tomorrow. Next stop: Banff. We are almost there.
Day 5 & 6: Calgary â Banff After days of flatlands, forests, and fuel stops, today was the reward. The moment we left Calgary and saw the Rockies rising in the distance, it felt real. That mix of awe, excitement, and disbeliefâlike, we made it. The drive from Calgary to Banff is short but breathtaking: the mountains grow taller with every turn. We pulled over more times than we probably should have. Pines, rivers, and that unmistakable alpine air. We arrived in Banff just in time for a late lunch, surrounded by peaks and that cozy mountain-town vibe. It is official: from Toronto to Banffâcoast-to-coast (almost), and every kilometre worth it. Now? Time to slow down, explore, and breathe it all in.
Day 7: Banff â Moose Jaw – Leaving the Mountains Behind Today we said goodbye to the mountains. One last deep breath of that crisp alpine air⌠then back on the road, heading east. The adventure is not over yet, but today marked the shiftâfrom exploring to reflecting.
Day 8: Moose Jaw â Regina â Winnipeg Today was a blend of road travel, discovery and scientific exploration. We departed Moose Jaw early, traversing the highway with expansive prairie skies ahead. Before this, we made a special stop in Regina to visit the Royal Saskatchewan Museum & Science Centre. We arrived in Winnipeg by evening, ready to recharge and immerse ourselves in the cityâs atmosphere before the next leg of our journey.
Day 9: Winnipeg â Thunder Bay â Camping Under the Stars Today was a lengthy but rewarding drive, transitioning from city streets to the serenity of Lake Superiorâs rugged shoreline. The open road stretched ahead as we left Winnipeg behind, rolling through the prairies before the landscape gradually shifted back into dense forests and rocky outcrops. By evening, we arrived at a tranquil campground near Thunder Bay.
Day 10: Thunder Bay â Hearst â Into the Heart of Northern Ontario Today was dedicated to quieter roads and the vast wilderness of Northern Ontario. Leaving Thunder Bay, the highways wound through dense forests, sparkling lakes and a profound sense of peace that makes one feel miles away from it all. Tonightâs destination: Hearst. A quaint town that exudes a warm welcome amidst the wilderness.
Day 11: Hearst â Cochrane â Sudbury â Polar Bears & Family Time Today was unforgettable. We deviated from the highway for a special stop in Cochrane to visit the renowned Polar Bear Habitat. Observing these majestic creatures up close was profoundly awe-inspiring. After our Arctic adventure, we travelled south to Sudbury, where we reunited with family and spent the night at my brotherâs residence.
Day 12: Sudbury â Toronto â Homeward Bound After nearly two weeks on the road, today was dedicated to returning home to the vibrant atmosphere of Toronto. Departing Sudbury this morning was bittersweet, as the trip had been filled with numerous memorable experiences, from city streets to rugged mountains, expansive prairie skies and encounters with polar bears. We look forward to many more adventures on the road.
